Ralph - The novel’s protagonist, is the first leader of the stranded boys who survived the plane crash of the island. He represents the Apollonian archetype and rational side of humanity as Ralph is constantly thinking of what is best for the group. He attempts to make life “fun” yet civilized as he develops projects and rules to better their chances of survival such as a big signal fire on a mountain and making huts for shelter. Both Ralph and the island itself are described as “fair” and “good” respectively in the beginning of the novel (Golding 7-35).
The Beast - A fictitious monster that is developed from the fear of the children. Is in fact only the body of a man with a parachute stuck to a tree.

Jack - The novel’s foil and antagonist. Jack contradicts Ralph, representing the leader of the Dionysian savages and irrational side of humanity. First he is the leader of the hunters, but later diverges on his own path and forms his own tribe and moves to Castle Rock, a fortress like rocky outcrop connected to the island. He also develops a tribal hunting “chant” to “Kill the beast! Cut his throat! Spill his blood” (Golding 152)!
The Lord of the Flies - The name given to the sow’s head that Jack’s tribe puts on a stake as an offering to “The Beast”. Comes to represent the devil, and reflects the evil within mankind.

Simon - Represents the “Christ-figure” of the novel; is ironically killed after his interaction with “The Lord of the Flies” as he tries to enlighten the group of his new-found knowledge that “The Beast” of the island is merely a parachutist stuck on a tree.
The Littluns - British pronunciation of “the little ones”. They are the younger children of the island who survived the crash. Normally within the age group of 5-6.

Piggy - A fat boy who complains all of the time, stands out from the other boys, and is very intellectual and rational. Ralph is somewhat his only friend, is also naturally looked up to by the littluns. Piggy is killed at Castle Rock as one of the boys (Roger) hurdles a boulder towards him that knocks him off the cliff, a forty foot drop to his death.
Roger - One of the older boys that sides with Jack. A cruel person who is against the rules, who likes to bully the littluns. Later kills piggy by using a boulder at Castle Rock.
